The American Civil Rights Movement was a sustained campaign, most intensively from the mid-1950s through the late 1960s, to end legally sanctioned racial segregation, disenfranchisement, and discrimination against African Americans. Its roots lay in the failures of Reconstruction after the U.S. Civil War, the entrenchment of 'Jim Crow' laws across the American South, and the 'separate but equal' doctrine upheld in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). Early organizing through the NAACP, Black churches, labor unions, and historically Black colleges set the stage for a mass movement, while World War II — fought rhetorically against racist ideology abroad — sharpened domestic contradictions and energized returning Black veterans. The movement's decisive phase opened with the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education ruling (1954), which struck down school segregation, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–56) led by Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. Mass nonviolent action — sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the Birmingham campaign, the 1963 March on Washington, and the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery marches — confronted segregationist authorities and pressured the federal government. Congress responded with the Civil Rights Act (1964), the Voting Rights Act (1965), and the Fair Housing Act (1968). The Cold War context mattered: Washington viewed images of racist violence as a strategic liability, while the Soviet Union amplified them, and decolonization across Africa and Asia gave Black American activists international allies and frames. By the late 1960s the movement fractured between integrationist liberalism and more radical currents (Black Power, the Black Panthers), and faced state surveillance through programs such as the FBI's COINTELPRO. King's assassination in 1968 marked a symbolic close to its classical phase. Today the movement is debated as both a historical achievement and an unfinished project: the Supreme Court's Shelby County v. Holder decision (2013) gutted key Voting Rights Act enforcement, while the killing of George Floyd in 2020 triggered the largest racial-justice protests in U.S. history. Contemporary disputes over voting access, policing, affirmative action (ended for university admissions in 2023), and the teaching of race in schools show that the movement's core questions remain politically live.
