Running a Stakeholder Mapping Workshop
A stakeholder mapping workshop brings diverse team members together to collectively identify and analyze stakeholders. The process typically takes 2-3 hours for a major project and follows a structured flow.
Phase 1: Brainstorm (30 min). List every possible stakeholder without filtering. Use prompts: Who is affected? Who has authority? Who has resources? Who has information? Who will implement? Who can block? Who can amplify?
Phase 2: Categorize and prioritize (30 min). Place stakeholders on the power-interest grid. Discuss and debate placements — disagreements often reveal important insights.
Phase 3: Analyze motivations (30 min). For each high-priority stakeholder, document their interests, concerns, potential reactions, and relationship to other stakeholders.
Phase 4: Plan engagement (30 min). Assign engagement strategies, communication plans, and relationship owners for each key stakeholder.
