Five simultaneous crises, one common thread: the institutions and agreements meant to contain violence — ceasefire accords, diplomatic norms, governing coalitions — are fracturing faster than they can be repaired.
The Strait of Hormuz has now become the deal's central battlefield. US CENTCOM carried out fresh "self-defence" strikes near Bandar Abbas for the second time this week, even as Iran's negotiating delegation returned from Doha, where talks remain stalled on the core issues: whether Tehran surrenders its enriched uranium stockpile and whether it gets sanctions relief. Trump hardened his position at a cabinet meeting Wednesday, saying Iran would receive no sanctions relief at all and threatening force against Oman — a key mediator — if it cooperated with Tehran to manage Hormuz. The US Treasury simultaneously blacklisted Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority. The pattern is clear: Washington is piling on economic and military pressure at the exact moment talks are described as "95% complete," a squeeze that either forces a capitulation or collapses the negotiations entirely. Shipping through the strait remains 90% below peacetime levels, and the ECB's chief economist Philip Lane warned Thursday that the energy shock will have a "persistent" inflationary impact on Europe.
