Sudan’s Civil War Enters Fourth Year Amid Military Stalemate and Humanitarian Crisis

Sudan’s civil war drags on with no clear military winner as talks flounder, deepening a humanitarian disaster that demands urgent international focus.

Sudan’s conflict, now entering its fourth year, remains locked in a grinding military deadlock between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Despite repeated attempts at negotiations, frontline gains have been minimal on either side, cementing a costly stalemate with devastating consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire. The fighting continues largely unchanged, prolonging what has become a protracted and complex war with severe regional and global implications.

Military Impasse Underlines the Crisis

Since violence erupted in 2023 between Sudan’s military and the RSF — a powerful faction originally formed from Janjaweed militias — neither side has gained decisive advantage. The Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, controls Khartoum and much of the north, while the RSF dominates large parts of Darfur and other western regions. This persistent stalemate highlights both groups' entrenched political ambitions and deep divisions following Sudan’s turbulent transition after Omar al-Bashir’s 2019 ouster.

Attempts at peace talks have been sporadic and largely unsuccessful, with ceasefires routinely violated and negotiations stalling over power-sharing and control of lucrative resources like gold mines. This deadlock risks turning Sudan’s civil war into a frozen conflict, much like conflicts in other parts of Africa where prolonged negotiations produce fragile and temporary pauses rather than lasting peace.

Humanitarian Fallout Demands Global Attention

While the two factions fight for control, Sudan’s civilian population suffers the consequences. Humanitarian organizations warn that aid delivery is severely hampered by insecurity and logistical challenges, leaving millions without basic necessities. Over 3 million people are internally displaced, with many fleeing to neighboring countries, feeding a growing regional refugee crisis.

Access to healthcare, food, and clean water has deteriorated drastically, raising fears of famine and disease outbreaks. International actors have provided some emergency relief, but without a durable political settlement, the humanitarian situation risks spiraling out of control.

Why This Matters and What to Watch

Sudan’s ongoing conflict is a key flashpoint in a region already fraught with instability—from the Sahel to the Horn of Africa. The stalemate weakens Sudanese state institutions and undermines efforts to rebuild a democratic government after decades of authoritarian rule. It also
