Foreign Policy

Zambia's foreign policy under President Hichilema has pivoted toward re-engaging Western partners after years of growing Chinese economic influence under predecessor Edgar Lungu. The Lobito Corridor -- a US and EU-backed rail project linking Zambian copper mines to Angola's Atlantic port -- represents a major Western infrastructure alternative to Chinese Belt and Road projects and has become a flagship of Zambia's economic diplomacy.

The country's debt restructuring experience has made Zambia a leading voice on sovereign debt reform, the G20 Common Framework's limitations, and the need for multilateral solutions to debt distress in the Global South. Zambia maintains its traditional role as a regional mediator and peacekeeping contributor, and actively participates in SADC, COMESA, and AU deliberations.

MUN Delegate Guide

Zambia is a well-respected, moderate delegation with strong democratic credentials and relevance to contemporary global economic debates. Lead on sovereign debt reform -- Zambia's restructuring experience makes you the definitive voice on the G20 Common Framework, creditor coordination problems, and the impact of unsustainable debt on development.

The copper-energy transition nexus gives Zambia relevance in climate and economic discussions: advocate for fair value chains that benefit producing countries, responsible mining practices, and technology transfer. The Lobito Corridor project positions Zambia as a case study in diversifying economic partnerships beyond China.

Build coalitions with SADC and COMESA states, Western democracies (US, UK, EU), and the G-77 on debt and development. Zambia's liberation-era history gives credibility with the Non-Aligned Movement and progressive blocs. Key allies include Malawi, Tanzania, Botswana, and increasingly the US and EU. On major votes, Zambia follows the African consensus but has a more pro-Western orientation under Hichilema than under previous governments. Position Zambia as a bridge-builder between African and Western perspectives on economic governance.
