Foreign Policy

Botswana's foreign policy is characterized by principled non-alignment, good governance advocacy, and quiet diplomacy. Unusually for an African state, Botswana has been willing to criticize other African governments on governance and human rights, including calling for Zimbabwe's suspension from the Commonwealth and recognizing Kosovo. This principled stance gives Botswana outsized moral authority.

Economically, the De Beers partnership remains central, tying Botswana to global diamond markets. The country has also engaged with China and India on diversification and infrastructure. Within SADC, Botswana is a stabilizing force, though it avoids the interventionist posture of South Africa. The country has been an important voice in climate adaptation discussions, given its vulnerability to desertification and water scarcity in the Kalahari region.

MUN Delegate Guide

Botswana is a prestige delegation for delegates who want to champion good governance, democracy, and rule of law in Africa. Your strongest argument is Botswana's track record: a poor, landlocked country that became an upper-middle-income democracy through institutional quality and resource management. Cite the 2024 peaceful transition of power as evidence of democratic maturity.

Lead on governance, anti-corruption, diamond industry ethics (the Kimberley Process, which Botswana co-founded), and climate adaptation for semi-arid countries. Botswana can take principled positions that other African states avoid -- use this independence to build credibility.

Align with the African Group, SADC, the Commonwealth, and like-minded democracies. Botswana works well with the UK, the US, and EU on governance issues while maintaining African solidarity on development and structural reform. Key allies include Namibia, Zambia, and South Africa. Be prepared to discuss economic diversification away from diamonds and the challenges of HIV/AIDS response. Avoid being preachy about governance -- let Botswana's track record speak for itself.
