Foreign Policy

Tanzania's foreign policy is rooted in Nyerere's legacy of pan-Africanism, non-alignment, and anti-imperialism. The country played a pivotal role in Southern African liberation movements, providing bases and support for the ANC, FRELIMO, SWAPO, and other groups. This history gives Tanzania enduring moral authority in African diplomacy.

Under President Hassan, Tanzania has pursued a more outward-looking economic diplomacy, seeking to attract foreign investment, expand tourism, and develop the Bagamoyo port and LNG projects. The country maintains balanced relations with Western powers, China, and Gulf states. Tanzania has been cautious about deep integration within the EAC, particularly regarding free movement of labor and a proposed monetary union, reflecting concerns about economic competition with Kenya.

MUN Delegate Guide

Tanzania is a highly respected delegation in Model UN, carrying the weight of Nyerere's pan-African legacy. Emphasize Tanzania's role in African liberation, commitment to South-South solidarity, and status as one of the most stable and peaceful nations on the continent.

Champion pan-African unity, UNSC reform (Africa's permanent seat), South-South cooperation, and non-alignment. Tanzania can speak credibly on peacekeeping (significant UN troop contributor), environmental conservation (Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, marine conservation), and regional integration through the EAC and SADC.

Build coalitions within the EAC and SADC -- Tanzania bridges these two regional communities. Key allies include Kenya (despite occasional rivalries), Uganda, Mozambique, and South Africa. Tanzania generally follows the African Group consensus and Non-Aligned Movement positions. On contentious issues, Tanzania tends to favor dialogue over sanctions and African-led solutions over external intervention. Use Tanzania's stability and reputation to position yourself as a mediator in divisive debates.
