Foreign Policy

Malawi maintains a generally pro-Western foreign policy orientation, with significant development partnerships with the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, and the European Union. The country has historically been one of the few African states to maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, though it switched recognition to Beijing in 2008 in exchange for substantial Chinese development aid.

Regionally, Malawi participates actively in SADC and COMESA, though it has limited influence compared to larger neighbors like Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique. Malawi's foreign policy priorities center on attracting development aid, promoting agricultural trade, and maintaining peaceful relations with all neighbors. The country has a border dispute with Tanzania over Lake Malawi's boundary.

MUN Delegate Guide

As Malawi's delegate, position yourself as a moderate, development-focused voice within the African Group. Malawi's 2020 court-ordered election re-run is a powerful example to cite in governance and democracy debates -- it demonstrates that African institutions can self-correct. Use this to build credibility on rule-of-law topics.

Focus on food security, agricultural development, climate adaptation for landlocked developing countries, and HIV/AIDS. Malawi can speak authentically about the challenges of tobacco-dependent economies transitioning under WHO Framework Convention pressures. On trade, advocate for fair commodity pricing and special treatment for LDCs.

Build alliances with neighboring SADC states (Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania) and Commonwealth countries. Malawi generally follows the African Group consensus on major votes. Avoid the Lake Malawi border dispute unless directly asked -- it is a sensitive topic with Tanzania. Malawi is a consensus-oriented delegation; use that to position yourself as a bridge-builder in negotiations.
