Papua New Guinea is the largest Pacific Island nation by both population and area, with extraordinary linguistic diversity -- over 800 languages, more than any other country. It is rich in natural resources including gold, copper, oil, gas, and timber, but development remains uneven with most of the population living in rural, subsistence-based communities.
PNG has become a site of intensifying great-power competition, with the US signing a defense cooperation agreement in 2023 to counter China's growing Pacific presence. Australia remains its largest aid donor and closest strategic partner.

As PNG, emphasize your unique position as the largest Pacific Island state. Your resource wealth and strategic location give you leverage that smaller Pacific states lack.
Lead the Melanesian Spearhead Group and coordinate with the Pacific Islands Forum. On climate, frame deforestation and sea-level rise as twin threats. Push for fair resource extraction terms and technology transfer. Balance Australian and Chinese engagement -- both need you more than you need either.
Foreign Policy
PNG's foreign policy balances its close relationship with Australia (its former colonial administrator) with growing engagement from China and the US. It is the anchor state of the Melanesian Spearhead Group and a key voice in the Pacific Islands Forum.
PNG pursues resource diplomacy, seeking to maximize returns from its LNG, mining, and forestry sectors. Its strategic location between Asia and the Pacific makes it increasingly important in Indo-Pacific geopolitics.
