Japan is the world's fourth-largest economy and a cornerstone of the US-led security architecture in the Indo-Pacific. A member of the G7 and the Quad (with the US, Australia, and India), Japan has steadily expanded its security role in recent years while maintaining its constitutional commitment to pacifism.

Japan is the second-largest contributor to the UN regular budget and a longstanding aspirant for permanent membership on the UN Security Council. It is a leading provider of Official Development Assistance (ODA), particularly in Southeast Asia and Africa.

Key security concerns include North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, China's military expansion, and Taiwan Strait stability.

MUN Delegate Guide

As Japan, present yourself as a responsible, rules-based power that leads through ODA, technology, and multilateral engagement. Push for UNSC reform and champion nonproliferation -- North Korea is your top security concern.

Ally closely with the US, Australia, India (Quad), and EU states. Court ASEAN nations by offering development assistance and infrastructure alternatives to China's BRI. On maritime disputes, emphasize international law and UNCLOS.

Avoid getting drawn into confrontational debates about WWII history -- acknowledge the past briefly and pivot to Japan's postwar contributions to peace and development.

Foreign Policy

Japan's foreign policy is anchored by the US-Japan Security Alliance, the most important bilateral relationship in Asia-Pacific security. Japan has deepened ties with Australia, India, and ASEAN through the 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific' vision. Relations with South Korea have improved recently after decades of historical tensions.

Japan advocates for rules-based international order, freedom of navigation, and peaceful resolution of disputes. It maintains a territorial dispute with China over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands and with Russia over the Northern Territories/Kuril Islands.
