Foreign Policy

Singapore's foreign policy is shaped by vulnerability -- a small, multi-ethnic city-state between two much larger Muslim-majority neighbors (Malaysia and Indonesia). This drives a pragmatic, multi-aligned approach: close security ties with the US, deep economic engagement with China, and strong ASEAN commitment.

Singapore champions international law, free trade, and the rules-based order as existential necessities for small states. It maintains robust defense ties through the Five Power Defence Arrangements and bilateral agreements with the US, India, and Australia.

MUN Delegate Guide

As Singapore, be the principled voice for small states and international law. Your credibility comes from your governance track record and economic success. Champion free trade, the rule of law, and multilateralism.

Work within ASEAN but be willing to take principled positions -- Singapore has historically been more willing than other ASEAN members to speak up on issues like the South China Sea and Myanmar. Maintain equidistance between the US and China while subtly supporting the rules-based order.

Build coalitions with other small states and city-states. Use your role as a financial and logistics hub to argue that stability and openness benefit everyone.

Avoid being drawn into debates about domestic political freedom -- acknowledge you have a different model and pivot to outcomes (low corruption, high HDI, rule of law).
