Foreign Policy

Namibia's foreign policy is rooted in its liberation struggle history, maintaining solidarity with other liberation movements and their successor governments. SWAPO's historical ties to Cuba, China, and the Soviet Union continue to influence diplomatic relationships, and Namibia has maintained strong positions on Palestinian rights, Western Sahara self-determination, and anti-colonialism.

Namibia went viral in 2024 when its ambassador delivered a powerful speech at the ICJ criticizing Germany's position in the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel, drawing parallels to the Herero and Nama genocide. This reflected Namibia's principled stance on anti-colonialism and self-determination. The country maintains strong economic ties with South Africa (dominant trade partner), the EU, and China, while also courting green hydrogen investment as a potential major export commodity.

MUN Delegate Guide

Namibia is a highly credible delegation on decolonization, self-determination, and the role of the UN in conflict resolution. Your country's independence is a direct UN success story -- cite it in any debate about the effectiveness of the multilateral system. Namibia's ICJ intervention on the Gaza genocide case demonstrates principled anti-colonial foreign policy that resonates across the Global South.

Lead on self-determination (Western Sahara, Palestine), historical justice (reparations, colonial-era genocide recognition), and green energy transitions (Namibia's green hydrogen ambitions). On marine resources, Namibia has one of Africa's best-managed fisheries and can speak to sustainable ocean governance.

Build coalitions with SADC states, liberation-era allies (Cuba, Angola, Tanzania), and the Non-Aligned Movement. Namibia works effectively with both Western and non-Western blocs, though its voting record leans toward the Global South on political issues. Key allies include South Africa, Angola, Cuba, and China. On the German genocide recognition, use this diplomatically to build credibility on historical justice and reparations debates without alienating Berlin, which is also an important development partner.
