The 2027 World Congress of the Global Society for Nineteenth-Century Studies is an academic conference dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the nineteenth century. Hosted in Valparaíso, CHL, this event brings together scholars from various disciplines to explore the historical, cultural, and societal transformations of the era. The congress aims to foster dialogue and present new research on a period that profoundly shaped the modern world.

## Committees & topics

- Topics

Diplomacy and International Relations in the Nineteenth Century · French History and Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century · German History and Studies in the Nineteenth Century · Modern European History and Studies · World History and Global Studies of the Nineteenth Century · Maritime Power and Global Geopolitics · Circulations Across Continents and Oceans · Port Cities and Urban Imaginaries

## Why it matters

The nineteenth century was a pivotal period marked by significant global shifts, including industrialization, colonialism, and the rise of new political ideologies. Understanding this era is crucial for comprehending contemporary international relations, as many of today's geopolitical structures and cultural dynamics have roots in this period. The congress offers a platform for scholars to delve into these complex historical processes, providing insights that can inform current diplomatic and societal challenges.

For diplomats and policymakers, the study of the nineteenth century can illuminate the origins of various international norms, conflicts, and alliances. For example, examining the \[Gender Dynamics Across Cultures](https://modeldiplomat.com/learn/lessons/gender-dynamics-across-cultures)\ of the time can reveal how societal structures influenced political decisions and international engagements. Similarly, understanding the historical context of power dynamics, as explored in lessons like \[The Power-Interest Grid](https://modeldiplomat.com/learn/lessons/power-interest-grid)\, can offer valuable perspectives on contemporary global governance.

The congress's focus on a global perspective is particularly relevant, moving beyond Eurocentric narratives to include experiences from regions like South America, where the event is held. This broader lens helps in identifying \Hidden Stakeholders\ and their historical roles, which is essential for a comprehensive \Stakeholder Mapping Workshop\ in any diplomatic context. The insights gained from such interdisciplinary discussions can enhance \Engagement Strategies\ by providing a deeper appreciation of historical grievances and cultural nuances.

## How to prepare

Participants preparing for this congress should consider the diverse and interconnected nature of nineteenth-century global history. Given the event's location in Valparaíso, CHL, it would be beneficial to explore the specific historical experiences of South America during this period, including its interactions with European powers and its own internal developments. This regional focus can provide a unique perspective on broader global themes.

For those interested in the diplomatic implications, preparing a \[Dynamic Analysis](https://modeldiplomat.com/learn/lessons/dynamic-analysis)\ of key historical events and their long-term consequences would be valuable. This could involve examining how different countries, such as GBR, FRA, or DEU, engaged with each other and with non-European territories. Understanding these historical interactions can offer a framework for analyzing current international relations.

Furthermore, considering the multifaceted nature of the nineteenth century, attendees should be ready to engage with research that spans various disciplines, from literature and art history to political science and economics. This interdisciplinary approach is key to grasping the full scope of the era's impact and its relevance to contemporary global challenges. The congress provides an opportunity to connect historical scholarship with modern diplomatic thought, fostering a deeper understanding of the forces that continue to shape our world.

### Diplomacy and International Relations in the Nineteenth Century

The nineteenth century reshaped the practice and theory of diplomacy. The Congress of Vienna (1814–1815) established a Concert of Europe intended to preserve a balance of power among the great powers after the Napoleonic Wars, institutionalizing multilateral congresses, resident embassies, and conservative legitimism under figures such as Metternich, Castlereagh, and Talleyrand. This system constrained, but did not prevent, the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, the Crimean War (1853–1856), and the wars of Italian and German unification. From roughly 1871, Bismarckian diplomacy and the Berlin Congress (1878) reorganized European alignments around managing nationalism in the Balkans and the decline of the Ottoman Empire. The Berlin Conference (1884–1885) extended European diplomatic norms to the partition of Africa, while bilateral alliances (the Dual and Triple Alliances, the Franco-Russian alliance, and later the Entente Cordiale) hardened into the bloc structure that would collapse into the First World War. For nineteenth-century studies, diplomacy is now read not only through chanceries and treaties but also through cultural exchange, international law (Vattel, Lieber, the Hague Conferences of 1899), humanitarian intervention discourse, and the gradual emergence of non-European states such as Japan and the Ottoman Empire as recognized diplomatic actors.

### French History and Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century

France's long nineteenth century, conventionally framed from 1789 to 1914, was defined by recurrent regime change and contested revolutionary legacies. The First Empire of Napoleon I exported the Civil Code and administrative centralization across Europe before its collapse in 1814–1815. The Restoration, the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe, the Second Republic, the Second Empire of Napoleon III, and the Third Republic each redefined the relationship between citizenship, religion, and the state, with 1830, 1848, and the Paris Commune of 1871 marking the principal revolutionary ruptures. France was simultaneously a major colonial power, conquering Algeria from 1830, expanding into Indochina, West Africa, and the Pacific, and intervening in Mexico (1861–1867). Industrialization, Haussmann's reconstruction of Paris, the rise of mass politics, anticlericalism, the Dreyfus Affair, and the 1905 separation of Church and state shaped a distinctly republican civic culture by the century's end. Current scholarship emphasizes France's entanglement with its empire, the circulation of revolutionary ideas, gender and labor history, and the cultural production of Paris as a global capital of art, science, and exile.

### German History and Studies in the Nineteenth Century

German-speaking Europe entered the nineteenth century as a fragmented mosaic of states reorganized by Napoleon into the Confederation of the Rhine and, after 1815, the German Confederation under Austrian presidency. Economic integration through the Zollverein (1834), the failed Frankfurt Parliament of 1848–49, and the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 progressively shifted leadership to Prussia. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 culminated in the proclamation of the German Empire at Versailles under Wilhelm I and Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The Kaiserreich combined rapid industrialization, world-leading scientific and university systems, and an expanding welfare state with authoritarian constitutional structures, the Kulturkampf against Catholicism, and antisocialist legislation. Under Wilhelm II after 1890, Weltpolitik, naval expansion, and overseas colonization in Africa and the Pacific—including the genocidal war against the Herero and Nama in German South-West Africa—pushed Germany into sharper rivalry with Britain, France, and Russia. Scholarship today situates German nineteenth-century history within transnational frames: migration to the Americas, colonial violence, Jewish emancipation and antisemitism, and the cultural production of Bildung, historicism, and Wissenschaft.

### Modern European History and Studies

The nineteenth century in Europe is often framed as a long arc from the French Revolution (1789) to the First World War (1914). It witnessed the consolidation of the modern state, the spread of industrial capitalism from Britain across the continent, mass urbanization, and the rise of nationalism as both an emancipatory and exclusionary force. The revolutions of 1848 marked a turning point in the politicization of working and middle classes, while the unifications of Italy (1861) and Germany (1871) redrew the map of central Europe. European states simultaneously projected power globally, partitioning Africa after 1884, extending informal empire in China and Latin America, and settling vast territories in the Americas and Oceania. Internally, the century saw the abolition of serfdom in the Habsburg lands (1848) and Russia (1861), Jewish emancipation, the slow extension of male suffrage, the emergence of socialist and feminist movements, and intensifying scientific and secularizing currents. Contemporary historiography stresses Europe's entanglement with its empires, transnational labor and intellectual networks, and the comparative study of liberalism, conservatism, and revolution across the continent.

### World History and Global Studies of the Nineteenth Century

The nineteenth century is increasingly understood as the first genuinely global century, characterized by what historians have called the Great Divergence and the Great Acceleration. Steam shipping, railways, the telegraph, and submarine cables compressed time and space; the gold standard, free-trade treaties, and mass migration integrated a world economy centered on the North Atlantic. Roughly 50 to 60 million Europeans emigrated overseas, while comparable streams of South Asian and Chinese indentured and contract laborers moved across the Indian and Pacific oceans. The period also saw the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade and chattel slavery in most of the Americas, the Opium Wars and unequal treaties imposed on Qing China, the Meiji Restoration in Japan (1868), the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the consolidation of British Crown rule, the scramble for Africa, and the emergence of new settler nations. Resistance, reform, and revolution—from the Taiping and Boxer movements to Latin American independence and the Mahdist state in Sudan—shaped the global order as much as imperial projection did. World-historical scholarship now centers connections, comparisons, and asymmetries: commodity chains, environmental transformation, religious and ideological circulation, and the uneven making of modernity beyond Europe.

### Maritime Power and Global Geopolitics

The nineteenth century was the high era of sea power as a structuring force of world politics. After Trafalgar (1805), the Royal Navy enforced a Pax Britannica that suppressed the Atlantic slave trade, policed global shipping lanes, and underwrote free-trade imperialism through gunboat diplomacy from Canton to Constantinople. The transition from sail to steam, the shift from wooden hulls to ironclads and then dreadnoughts, and the building of coaling stations, telegraph cables, and canals (Suez 1869, with Panama under construction) tied naval capability ever more tightly to industrial and fiscal strength. Mahan's The Influence of Sea Power upon History (1890) crystallized a strategic doctrine that informed American, German, Japanese, and Russian naval expansion. The Anglo-German naval race, the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05, and competition over Pacific and African coastlines marked the end of British uncontested primacy and prefigured twentieth-century maritime rivalries. Research today links naval history to imperial logistics, ocean science, environmental history, and the lived worlds of sailors, dockworkers, and coastal populations.

### Circulations Across Continents and Oceans

The nineteenth century unleashed unprecedented circulations of people, goods, capital, ideas, and pathogens. The abolition of the British and other Atlantic slave trades after 1807 was followed by the rise of indentured labor systems that moved Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Pacific Islander workers to plantations and mines across the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean rim, South America, and Oceania. European mass migration to the Americas, Australasia, and southern Africa unfolded alongside vast internal migrations within China, the Russian Empire, and South Asia. Commodities—cotton, sugar, tea, opium, rubber, guano, wheat—linked distant ecologies through industrial demand, while gold and silver rushes drew populations to California, Australia, the Witwatersrand, and the Klondike. Religious missions, scientific expeditions, anticolonial networks, the women's movement, socialist internationals, and pan-Islamic, pan-African, and pan-Asian thought all moved along the same steamship and telegraph routes. Epidemics of cholera and plague traveled with them, prompting the first international sanitary conferences from 1851. Current scholarship emphasizes how these circulations produced both global integration and new forms of racialized exclusion, including Chinese exclusion acts, passport regimes, and quarantines.

### Port Cities and Urban Imaginaries

Port cities were the laboratories of nineteenth-century globalization. Liverpool, Marseille, Hamburg, New York, New Orleans, Buenos Aires, Alexandria, Istanbul, Bombay, Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Yokohama, and Cape Town grew explosively as nodes where steam shipping, railways, banking houses, consulates, and migrant communities converged. Treaty ports along the Chinese coast and concession quarters in Ottoman cities embedded extraterritorial law into urban fabrics, while colonial port capitals fused European planning with local building traditions. These cities generated distinctive urban imaginaries—cosmopolitan, multilingual, and often anxious about race, disease, and disorder. They produced new publics through cafés, newspapers, theaters, world's fairs, and dockside labor militancy; they were also sites of plague outbreaks, segregation, and policing of mobility. Writers from Baudelaire and Dickens to Naguib Mahfouz's antecedents and the chroniclers of Calcutta and Lima made port cities central to literary modernity. Recent scholarship reads port cities comparatively, tracing how architecture, infrastructure, sanitation regimes, and diasporic communities circulated between them and shaped a shared, if unequal, nineteenth-century urban culture.
