The Green Revolution in India denotes the transformation of Indian agriculture beginning in the mid-1960s through the introduction of high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds, intensified use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, assured irrigation, and supportive state procurement policy. Variants and sequencing matter. The first phase (roughly 1966–72) was overwhelmingly a wheat revolution concentrated in Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, where canal irrigation and consolidated holdings already existed. A second phase extended HYV technology to rice, though gains in paddy were geographically uneven and slower to materialise. Later state initiatives sought to broaden the model: Operation Flood (1970, the dairy "White Revolution" led by Verghese Kurien and the National Dairy Development Board), the Blue Revolution in fisheries, and the Yellow Revolution in oilseeds invoked the same input-intensification logic.
