The Committees

The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee is the third General Assembly of the United Nations, tasked with a broad mandate surrounding social, humanitarian, and human rights issues from around the world. To delineate a general idea of the committee, some issues discussed within SOCHUM include, but are not limited to: human rights, global literacy, women’s rights, children’s rights, the treatment of refugees and displaced persons, international drug control, crime prevention, and the elimination of racism and discrimination.

SOCHUM also works closely with many other UN bodies in order to effectively address its mandated issues.

The Economic and Financial Committee is the Second Committee of the General Assembly and deals with issues relating to economic growth and development such as macroeconomic policy questions, financing for development, sustainable development, globalization and interdependence, information and communications technologies for development, and towards global partnerships.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with ensuring international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter. Its powers include establishing peacekeeping operations, enacting international sanctions, and authorising military action. The UNSC is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions on member states.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), sometimes known as the World Court, is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It settles disputes between states in accordance with international law and gives advisory opinions on international legal issues. The ICJ is the only international court that adjudicates general disputes between countries, with its rulings and opinions serving as primary sources of international law.

The Crisis Committee is by far the most unique one in the Model UN world. The delegates confront one or more limit situations that need urgent collaboration between the states in order to be solved. Matching the high-intensity pace of the debate, this committee has a procedure on its own, so we kindly recommend it to those who have already got a taste of MUNs and feel ready for a next great challenge.

In order to meet the Secretariat and Chairpersons, visit our Instagram and Facebook pages. Should you have any questions regarding the committees or topics, feel free to contact them!
