Biometric technologies, such as facial recognition, retinal pattern and behavioural characteristics,
are increasingly used for security purposes but raise serious concerns and fears about privacy and
the risk of racial and social discrimination. How can UN member states regulate these technologies
to ensure respect for human rights and biometric privacy and data?

According to the World Economic Forum, more than two thirds (69%) of global wealth is held by
developed nations while less than a third is owned by the developing world. Nearly half of the
world population has grown poorer over the last decade, equating to 5 billion people, while the
richest top 1% now owns nearly 44% of the world’s global income and financial assets. How can
the world’s governments take a proactive role in shaping their economies in order to boost and
promote more equality, equitable business models, trade transparency and make global economy
work for all Member States?
