North Macedonia's landmark 2018 Prespa Agreement with Greece -- resolving a 27-year naming dispute -- is one of the most celebrated diplomatic achievements in recent Balkans history. The country changed its constitutional name to secure Greek support for NATO membership (achieved 2020) and EU candidacy.

North Macedonia has a significant ethnic Albanian minority (about 25%) and successfully defused an ethnic conflict in 2001 through the Ohrid Framework Agreement, which provides a model for multi-ethnic governance in diverse societies.

MUN Delegate Guide

As North Macedonia, showcase the Prespa Agreement as proof that seemingly intractable disputes can be resolved through diplomacy and compromise. This gives you credibility on conflict resolution issues.

Coordinate with NATO allies and push for EU enlargement momentum. Present the Ohrid Framework as a model for multi-ethnic governance. Build sympathy for the Bulgarian identity dispute blocking your EU path -- frame it as an issue of fundamental rights and historical justice.

Foreign Policy

North Macedonia's foreign policy is centered on EU accession, which has been frustrated by Bulgarian demands regarding cultural and linguistic identity. Despite NATO membership, EU progress has stalled, testing the country's Euro-Atlantic commitment. The Prespa Agreement demonstrated willingness to make difficult compromises for integration.
