The General Assembly is the principal deliberative organ of the United Nations, established in 1945 under Chapter IV of the UN Charter. GA-style committees in Model UN simulate this large-format, formal diplomacy. Delegates typically negotiate over multi-week or multi-year crises rather than breaking news: ongoing wars, arms control regimes, sustainable development gaps, refugee flows, and contested questions of sovereignty. The drafting process emphasizes broad coalition-building across regional blocs — the African Group, GRULAC, the EU, the Arab Group, ASEAN, and the P5 — and produces written resolutions that must survive amendment and a final vote. Today, GA committees operate against a backdrop of intensified great-power rivalry, eroding consensus on liberal-internationalist norms, and renewed debates over Security Council reform and the limits of the General Assembly's own authority, particularly through 'Uniting for Peace' procedures invoked over Ukraine and Gaza.

Crisis committees in Model UN trace their lineage to the small, fast-moving executive bodies that historically managed acute international emergencies — the British War Cabinet, the U.S. ExComm during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, and the UN Security Council in its emergency sessions. Unlike the General Assembly's deliberative format, these bodies are designed for compressed decision-making under uncertainty, with limited information, contested intelligence, and irreversible consequences. The simulation format typically casts delegates as individual ministers, generals, advisors, or historical figures rather than as state representatives, and allows them to take unilateral action through private directives in addition to public committee-wide decisions. Crisis topics span historical reconstructions (the Congress of Vienna, the Cuban Missile Crisis, partition-era South Asia), ongoing geopolitical flashpoints (Taiwan Strait contingencies, Sahel instability, cyber escalation), and speculative or fictional scenarios. The defining mechanic is the crisis arc: a backroom staff introduces escalating updates — assassinations, troop movements, leaked documents, market shocks — that force the committee to react in real time while delegates simultaneously pursue personal portfolio powers, covert operations, and shifting alliances. Contemporary crisis simulation increasingly reflects the multi-domain character of modern conflict, integrating cyber operations, disinformation, economic coercion, and non-state actors alongside conventional military and diplomatic tools. The genre rewards delegates who can balance public posture with private maneuver, anticipate second-order consequences, and adapt when the scenario inevitably diverges from the historical record.
