Global Health – Delegation of South Africa
Forum: World Health Assembly (simulation)
Topic: Strengthening Pandemic Preparedness in Developing Nations
Mr. President, Distinguished Delegates, The COVID-19 pandemic exposed stark inequalities: while wealthier states secured 85% of vaccine doses in 2021, many African nations struggled to reach 10% immunization rates.
South Africa believes that equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics is not only a moral imperative but a prerequisite for collective global health security. We therefore support the creation of a Global Pandemic Preparedness Fund, to be financed by assessed contributions and voluntary pledges.
This Fund would underwrite local vaccine production facilities, bolster cold-chain logistics, and train community health workers in vulnerable regions. By building national capacities, we reduce future risks for all. South Africa is prepared to lead negotiations on governance of the Fund and calls on every Member State to contribute financially and technically.
Thank you.
