The Ganga River System is the most extensive drainage network on the Indian subcontinent and a recurring subject in UPSC General Studies Paper I physical geography. The river originates as the Bhagirathi from the Gangotri glacier in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand at an elevation of about 3,892 metres, and acquires the name Ganga at Devprayag, where it is joined by the Alaknanda. The Alaknanda itself is fed by the Dhauliganga, Nandakini, Pindar and Mandakini at the celebrated Panch Prayag confluences. After emerging from the Himalayan foothills at Haridwar onto the plains, the Ganga traverses Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal before splitting near Farakka into the Bhagirathi-Hooghly (flowing south through West Bengal) and the Padma (flowing into Bangladesh), ultimately emptying into the Bay of Bengal through the Sundarbans delta, the world's largest delta. The total length of the Ganga within India is approximately 2,525 kilometres.
The system's tributaries are conventionally divided into left-bank and right-bank groups, a distinction frequently tested in objective examinations. The major left-bank tributaries, fed by Himalayan snowmelt and therefore perennial, include the Ramganga, the Gomti, the Ghaghara (Karnali), the Gandak, the Kosi and the Mahananda. The principal right-bank tributaries include the Yamuna, the Tamsa (Tons), the Son and the Punpun. The Yamuna, the longest and most important right-bank tributary, rises from the Yamunotri glacier and runs parallel to the Ganga before joining it at the Sangam in Prayagraj (Allahabad), the site of the Kumbh Mela. The Yamuna in turn collects the Chambal, Sind, Betwa and Ken from the peninsular plateau and the Hindon, Sarda and Giri from the north.
The Ghaghara is the largest tributary of the Ganga by volume, while the Kosi—known historically as the "Sorrow of Bihar" for its propensity to shift course and inundate vast areas—rises in Tibet and is formed by the confluence of the Sun Kosi, Arun and Tamur. The Gandak, called the Narayani in Nepal, is formed by the Kaligandak and Trishulganga. The Son, draining the Amarkantak plateau in Madhya Pradesh (which also gives rise to the Narmada flowing westward), is the most significant peninsular right-bank contributor. This duality—perennial snow-fed Himalayan tributaries from the north and seasonal, rain-fed peninsular tributaries from the south—gives the Ganga its character as a perennial river with sharply seasonal discharge peaks during the southwest monsoon.
Contemporary governance of the basin is anchored in the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), established as a registered society in 2011 and given statutory authority under the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management) Authorities Order, 2016, which created the National Ganga Council chaired by the Prime Minister. The flagship Namami Gange Programme was launched in 2014 with an initial outlay of ₹20,000 crore by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The Indo-Bangladesh Ganges Water Treaty of 1996, signed in New Delhi, governs the sharing of dry-season flows at the Farakka Barrage and remains valid for thirty years, expiring in 2026. The Ganga was declared India's National River in 2008.
The Ganga River System must be distinguished from the adjacent Indus River System, which drains the western Himalayas through the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum and is governed internationally by the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, and from the Brahmaputra River System, which rises as the Tsangpo in Tibet and joins the Ganga's distributary Padma in Bangladesh to form the Meghna estuary. The combined Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin is the largest river system draining into the Bay of Bengal. In 2017 the Uttarakhand High Court accorded the Ganga and Yamuna the legal status of living persons, a ruling subsequently stayed by the Supreme Court of India. The interlinking of rivers proposal, including the Ken-Betwa link approved in 2021, would transfer water within and beyond the Ganga basin and remains environmentally contested. Glacial retreat at Gangotri, documented by the Geological Survey of India, threatens long-term lean-season flows.
