In Model UN crisis simulations, a Crisis Update Broadcast (sometimes called a "crisis update," "news flash," or simply an "update") is the primary mechanism by which the backroom injects new information into the committee room. It is typically delivered verbally by a crisis staffer who enters the room, interrupts debate, and reads a short prepared statement — sometimes supplemented by props, video, slides, or a printed handout.
Updates serve several functions. They escalate the stakes of the simulation, respond to directives and notes submitted by delegates, introduce new characters or off-stage actors, and steer the committee toward the crisis arc designed by the staff. A well-constructed update gives delegates concrete facts (locations, casualty figures, troop movements, market reactions) without prescribing a solution, forcing the committee to caucus and draft new directives.
Common formats include:
- News bulletins framed as wire-service or broadcast reports (e.g., "Reuters is reporting…").
- Intelligence briefings delivered by a staffer playing an in-character analyst.
- Diplomatic communiqués from foreign governments or non-state actors.
- Personal updates sent only to an individual delegate via a crisis note, distinct from a public broadcast.
Updates are usually paced according to a crisis arc planned before the conference, but experienced crisis directors adjust timing and content based on delegate creativity — a principle sometimes called "responsive crisis." Major North American circuits such as those organized around HNMUN, WorldMUN, McMUN, and ChoMUN have developed distinct house styles for how updates are written and performed.
Delegates are expected to treat the content of an update as canonical fact within the simulation, even when it contradicts real-world history, and to respond through directives, press releases, or private notes rather than by questioning the staff.
Example
At ChoMUN 2023, the crisis staff interrupted a Joint Crisis Committee on the Congo Crisis with an update announcing that Patrice Lumumba's convoy had been intercepted, forcing delegates to redraft their directives within minutes.
Frequently asked questions
An update is a public announcement to the entire committee, while a crisis note is a private written exchange between an individual delegate and the backroom about that delegate's personal portfolio actions.
