International commercial arbitration emerged in the twentieth century as the default mechanism for resolving cross-border business disputes, offering parties a neutral forum, procedural flexibility, and an enforceable award in lieu of national court litigation. Its modern legal architecture rests on three pillars: the 1958 New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, now ratified by over 170 states, which obliges domestic courts to enforce foreign awards subject to narrow exceptions; the 1985 UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration (revised in 2006), which has shaped the arbitration statutes of dozens of jurisdictions; and the institutional rules of bodies such as the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, HKIAC, and CRCICA, which administer the bulk of significant international cases. The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, around which pre-moots like the AlexU-CRCICA event are organised, focuses each year on a dispute arising under the 1980 UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) and resolved through arbitration under a chosen institutional regime. Recurring doctrinal themes include the formation and interpretation of arbitration agreements, the separability and competence-competence doctrines, the law applicable to the merits and to the arbitration agreement itself, the conduct of evidentiary proceedings, and the grounds for setting aside or refusing enforcement of awards under Article V of the New York Convention and Article 34 of the Model Law. Contemporary debates in the field concern the legitimacy and transparency of arbitration (particularly investor-state arbitration, though the Vis concerns commercial disputes), the rise of third-party funding, the use of expedited and emergency arbitrator procedures, the place of technology and remote hearings following the COVID-19 disruption, and diversity on tribunals. Regional centres in the Global South, including the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA), have grown in caseload and influence, reflecting a gradual decentralisation of arbitral practice away from the traditional European seats.
