Mock trial competitions trace their roots to the case-method legal training pioneered at American law schools in the late nineteenth century, which was gradually adapted for undergraduate and secondary-school students as a tool for civic education. The modern high school format took shape in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when state bar associations and groups such as the National Association of Bar Executives began organizing structured tournaments. The National High School Mock Trial Championship was founded in 1984, drawing state champion teams together to argue a common fact pattern under a uniform set of simplified rules of evidence and procedure modeled on the Federal Rules. Each year's case alternates between civil and criminal subject matter and is drafted by a host-state committee, complete with stipulated facts, witness affidavits, exhibits, and jury instructions.
