The Xi Jinping Era
How Xi Jinping has transformed Chinese politics — centralising power, anti-corruption campaigns, and the shift from collective leadership.
Consolidating Power
Xi Jinping took office as CCP General Secretary in 2012 and has since carried out the most significant centralisation of power since Mao Zedong. He accumulated titles — General Secretary, President, Chair of the Central Military Commission, and leader of numerous policy 'leading groups' — earning the designation 'Chairman of Everything.'
Xi's anti-corruption campaign, led by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, has disciplined over 1.5 million officials including senior 'tigers' like former Politburo Standing Committee member Zhou Yongkang. Critics argue the campaign is as much about eliminating political rivals as fighting corruption — allies have been largely spared while opponents have been targeted.
