Writing for Different Formats: LD, PF, and Policy

How case structure, evidence standards, and argumentation style change across Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Policy debate formats.

The Format Shapes the Case

A common mistake among novice debaters is writing one case and trying to shoehorn it into any format. In reality, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Policy debate have fundamentally different expectations for what a case should contain, how evidence is used, and what judges evaluate. A winning LD case would fail in Policy, and a strong Policy case would confuse a PF judge.

The differences stem from each format's intellectual DNA. Lincoln-Douglas grew out of philosophy and ethics, emphasizing values and criteria. Public Forum was designed for accessibility, rewarding persuasion and real-world evidence over technical jargon. Policy debate prizes depth, quantity of evidence, and systemic analysis of a single resolution over an entire season. Understanding these roots helps you write cases that judges in each format actually want to hear.
