Writing Effective Directives
How to draft crisis directives that are clear, actionable, and strategically sound — the collective action documents of crisis committee.
What Is a Directive?
A directive is the crisis committee equivalent of a resolution, but shorter, faster, and more action-oriented. While a GA resolution might have a page of preambulatory clauses, a crisis directive cuts straight to action. Directives typically range from half a page to two pages and contain specific, immediate orders.
There are generally two types:
Committee directives represent the collective will of the body. If your committee is a war cabinet, a committee directive might authorize a military operation or impose sanctions.
Personal directives (used in some crisis formats) are submitted by individual delegates and represent their character's personal actions. Not all conferences use this format — some handle personal actions entirely through crisis notes.
