Writing Background Guides

How to write a background guide that informs and excites delegates — the single most important document a chair produces.

Purpose of the Background Guide

The background guide is the foundation of your committee. It introduces the topic, provides essential context, and frames the questions delegates will debate. A great background guide doesn't just inform — it inspires delegates to research deeply and come prepared for sophisticated debate.

A standard background guide includes:

  1. Committee overview: Brief history and mandate of the body being simulated
  2. Topic introduction: What the issue is and why it matters now
  3. Historical context: How the situation developed and key turning points
  4. Current situation: Where things stand today, including recent developments
  5. Key stakeholders: Major actors and their positions
  6. Questions to consider: 3-5 guiding questions that frame the debate
  7. Further reading: Sources for delegates who want to go deeper
