Lesson 10 min 20 XP
Writing a Thesis
How to craft a clear, defensible thesis statement that anchors your entire case.
What Makes a Good Thesis
Your thesis is the central claim of your entire case — the one sentence that summarizes your position. A strong thesis is:
- Clear — anyone can understand exactly what you are arguing
- Specific — it makes a concrete claim, not a vague gesture toward a topic
- Defensible — there are strong arguments supporting it
- Debatable — a reasonable person could disagree (if no one would disagree, your thesis is not useful)
Weak thesis: 'Education is important.' Strong thesis: 'Universal pre-K education reduces the achievement gap more effectively than any intervention at the high school level.'
The strong version is specific (universal pre-K), makes a comparative claim (more effective than high school interventions), and is clearly debatable (someone could argue high school interventions matter more).
