Why Culture Matters in Diplomacy
How cultural differences shape communication, negotiation, and international relations — and why ignoring them leads to failure.
Culture Is the Water We Swim In
Culture shapes everything: how we greet people, how we express disagreement, how we build trust, and what we consider polite. In international settings, cultural differences don't just cause awkward moments — they can derail negotiations, destroy relationships, and lead to genuine conflict.
Consider a simple example: In many Western cultures, direct eye contact signals honesty and confidence. In several East Asian and African cultures, sustained eye contact with a senior person is disrespectful. A diplomat unaware of this difference might interpret respect as evasiveness, or confidence as aggression.
Cultural competence isn't about memorizing rules for every country. It's about developing the awareness to recognize when cultural differences might be at play and the humility to ask rather than assume.
