What Is Policy Analysis?
An introduction to the discipline — what policy analysts do, who they work for, and the frameworks they use.
The Discipline of Policy Analysis
Policy analysis is the systematic evaluation of policy options to address public problems. It bridges the gap between academic research and political decision-making, asking not just 'what is the problem?' but 'what should we do about it?'
Policy analysts work in government agencies, think tanks, international organisations, NGOs, and the private sector. Their job is to identify problems, evaluate options, and recommend courses of action — while being clear about trade-offs, uncertainties, and value judgements. Good policy analysis is rigorous in its evidence, honest about its assumptions, and practical about political feasibility.
