What Is Mock Trial?
An introduction to mock trial — the competitive simulation of a courtroom trial, from high school to law school.
Welcome to Mock Trial
Mock trial is a courtroom simulation competition. Teams receive a fictional legal case — complete with witness statements, evidence, and legal statutes — and present both sides (prosecution/plaintiff and defense) before a real judge or attorney.
Unlike debate, mock trial has specific roles: attorneys who argue the law and examine witnesses, and witnesses who testify in character based on their sworn statements.
Why Mock Trial?
- Critical thinking: Analyze facts, identify legal issues, and build arguments
- Public speaking: Deliver opening statements, examinations, and closings
- Teamwork: 6-8 members must coordinate a unified case theory
- Performance: Witnesses must act convincingly while staying within their affidavits
- Real-world skills: Law school admissions officers love mock trial experience
