What Is a Political Campaign?

The organized effort to win an election, from ancient Athens to modern data-driven operations.

What Campaigns Are

A political campaign is an organized effort to influence the decision of a particular group of voters. At its core, every campaign answers three questions: Why should people vote for this candidate? How do we reach the people whose votes we need? And how do we get those people to actually show up on Election Day?

Campaigns have existed as long as elections have. Roman candidates for the Senate whitened their togas (the origin of 'candidate,' from candidus, meaning white) and walked the Forum shaking hands. Abraham Lincoln's 1860 campaign organized 'Wide Awakes' clubs that held torchlight parades. What has changed is not the fundamental purpose but the tools: data analytics, television advertising, social media, and micro-targeting have transformed a craft into an industry.
