Wartime Leadership
Churchill's leadership during Britain's most perilous months — the fall of France, the Battle of Britain, and the Blitz.
Standing Alone
France fell in June 1940. Britain stood alone against Nazi Germany. Within Churchill's own War Cabinet, Halifax advocated exploring peace terms through Mussolini. Churchill fought this proposal over three critical days (May 26-28, 1940), arguing that any negotiation from a position of weakness would reduce Britain to a 'slave state.' He won the argument — one of the most consequential decisions of the twentieth century.
The Battle of Britain (July-October 1940) saw the Royal Air Force defend against the Luftwaffe's attempt to achieve air superiority as a prelude to invasion. The RAF's victory — aided by radar, codebreaking, and the courage of fighter pilots — was the first major defeat inflicted on Nazi Germany.
