What the Industrial Revolution Was
The Industrial Revolution denotes the transition, beginning in Britain around 1760 and accelerating after 1780, from agrarian hand-production to machine-based factory manufacture powered first by water and then by steam. UPSC treats it not as a list of inventions but as a structural transformation of production, society and global power that set the stage for modern imperialism. The conventional periodisation distinguishes the First Industrial Revolution (c. 1760–1840: textiles, coal, iron, steam) from the Second (c. 1870–1914: steel, chemicals, electricity, the internal-combustion engine).
Why Britain First
The examiner expects you to marshal causes, not narrate them. Cluster them:
- Agricultural Revolution: enclosure (the General Enclosure Acts culminating in 1801 and 1845), Jethro Tull's seed drill (c. 1701) and Charles Townshend's crop rotation raised yields, freeing labour for industry.
- Capital and finance: profits from Atlantic trade and the slave economy, plus the Bank of England (1694) and a developed credit market, supplied investment.
- Raw materials and energy: abundant coal and iron ore; Abraham Darby's coke-smelting (1709) at Coalbrookdale broke the charcoal bottleneck.
- Technology: James Hargreaves' spinning jenny (1764), Richard Arkwright's water frame (1769), Samuel Crompton's mule (1779), Edmund Cartwright's power loom (1785), and above all James Watt's separate-condenser steam engine (patented 1769, commercialised with Matthew Boulton from 1775).
- Markets and empire: a captive colonial market and the Navigation Acts; political stability after 1688; and the laissez-faire ideology codified in Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations (1776).
The Sequence of Mechanisation
Cotton textiles led because demand was elastic and the process was easily mechanised. The factory system, pioneered at Arkwright's Cromford mill (1771), concentrated workers under one roof and under clock discipline. George Stephenson's Rocket (1829) and the Liverpool–Manchester Railway (1830) inaugurated the railway age, collapsing transport costs and integrating national markets. Henry Bessemer's converter (1856) and later the Siemens–Martin open-hearth process made cheap steel the signature of the Second Industrial Revolution, alongside Michael Faraday's electromagnetic induction (1831) maturing into electric power and Werner von Siemens' dynamo (1866). Retain these names and dates: UPSC prelims and Mains both reward precise attribution rather than vague claims that 'machines were invented'.
