The Twitter/X Transformation

A case study of how Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter illustrates the risks and realities of concentrated platform ownership.

One Man Buys the Town Square

In October 2022, Elon Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, immediately renaming it X. The acquisition was the most dramatic demonstration of a problem at the heart of digital democracy: a platform used by 400 million people, including heads of state, journalists, and activists worldwide, could be transformed overnight by the decisions of a single individual.

Within weeks, Musk laid off approximately 80% of the company's workforce, including most of the trust and safety team responsible for content moderation. He reinstated previously banned accounts, including those suspended for hate speech and misinformation. He replaced the verification system with a paid subscription model, eliminating the distinction between verified journalists, officials, and anyone willing to pay $8 per month.
