Topicality
The procedural argument that the affirmative plan does not fall within the resolution — and how to win or beat it.
The Structure of Topicality
Topicality (T) is a procedural argument that the affirmative plan does not meet the resolution. It is structured as:
- Interpretation — the negative defines a key term in the resolution (e.g., 'substantially' means at least a 25% increase)
- Violation — the affirmative plan does not meet this definition
- Standards — reasons why the negative's interpretation is better (limits, ground, predictability, grammar)
- Voting issue — why the judge should vote negative on topicality (jurisdiction, fairness, education)
If the negative wins topicality, the affirmative loses regardless of how good their case is — it is a knockout argument. This makes T one of the most powerful weapons in the negative arsenal.
