The World Health Organization

The WHO's role, structure, funding, and the political tensions that shape global health governance.

What the WHO Does

The World Health Organization, established in 1948, is the UN's specialized agency for health. Headquartered in Geneva with six regional offices and over 150 country offices, it coordinates international health responses, sets technical standards, and provides guidance to member states.

The WHO's core functions include disease surveillance, responding to health emergencies, setting norms and standards (like the International Health Regulations), and providing technical assistance to countries. The World Health Assembly — composed of all 194 member states — is its supreme decision-making body.
