The UN System Today

Understanding the principal organs, specialized agencies, and how the sprawling UN system actually works.

The Six Principal Organs

The UN Charter establishes six principal organs. The General Assembly is the main deliberative body where all 193 members have one vote; its resolutions are non-binding but carry moral weight. The Security Council has 15 members (5 permanent with veto power, 10 elected) and is the only organ that can issue binding resolutions and authorize military force.

The Secretariat, led by the Secretary-General, is the UN's administrative backbone with about 44,000 staff worldwide. The International Court of Justice in The Hague settles legal disputes between states. The Economic and Social Council coordinates economic and social work across UN agencies. The Trusteeship Council has suspended operations after completing its decolonization mandate.
