The Rivonia Trial
The trial that could have ended with Mandela's execution — and the speech that made him an international symbol of resistance.
Arrest and Charges
In August 1962, Mandela was arrested after 17 months living underground, during which he had traveled across Africa and to London seeking support for the armed struggle. He was initially sentenced to five years for incitement and leaving the country illegally.
Then, in July 1963, police raided Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, a suburb of Johannesburg, and arrested most of the MK high command. They discovered documents outlining plans for sabotage and guerrilla warfare. Mandela and nine others were charged with sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government — crimes that carried the death penalty.
