The Prince
Machiavelli's most famous work — what it actually says, why he wrote it, and why it shocked Europe.
Why Machiavelli Wrote 'The Prince'
In 1512, the Medici returned to power in Florence with papal and Spanish backing. Machiavelli was dismissed from office, arrested, tortured on the strappado (a device that dislocates the shoulders), and briefly imprisoned on suspicion of conspiracy. He was then exiled to his small farm outside Florence.
It was in this forced retirement that Machiavelli wrote 'The Prince' (1513), dedicating it to Lorenzo de' Medici in what was partly a job application — an attempt to win back favor with the new rulers. The book was not published until 1532, five years after his death.
