The Prime Minister of India
The powers, selection, and constraints of the Indian PM within the parliamentary system.
The PM's Role
India follows the Westminster model: the President is the ceremonial head of state while the Prime Minister is the head of government. The PM is typically the leader of the party (or coalition) that commands a majority in the Lok Sabha. The President formally appoints the PM and the Council of Ministers on the PM's advice.
The PM chairs the Cabinet, coordinates between ministries, represents India internationally, and is answerable to Parliament. India has experienced long periods of dominant-party rule (Congress under Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, BJP under Modi) punctuated by coalition governments (the United Front in 1996-98, UPA in 2004-2014) where the PM's power was significantly constrained by coalition partners.
