The JCPOA (Iran Nuclear Deal)

The landmark 2015 agreement, its terms, the US withdrawal, and the collapse of diplomacy.

The Deal

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), agreed in July 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 (US, UK, France, Russia, China, plus Germany), was the most significant nonproliferation agreement in decades. Iran agreed to reduce its enriched uranium stockpile by 98%, limit enrichment to 3.67%, reduce centrifuges from 19,000 to 6,104, and accept intrusive IAEA inspections including continuous monitoring.

In exchange, the P5+1 lifted nuclear-related sanctions, unfreezing billions in Iranian assets and allowing Iran to re-enter global oil markets. The deal did not address Iran's ballistic missile program, regional activities, or human rights — a deliberate choice to keep the agreement focused and achievable.
