The Human Cost

Civilian casualties, refugees, veterans, and the toll the War on Terror exacted on ordinary people.

By the Numbers

Brown University's Costs of War project provides the most comprehensive accounting. As of 2023:

  • Deaths: Over 900,000 people killed directly by war violence in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, and other zones. This includes roughly 387,000 civilians, 177,000 national military and police, and thousands of US and coalition forces.
  • Displacement: At least 38 million people displaced — more than any conflict since World War II.
  • Cost: Over $8 trillion in US federal spending, including future obligations for veteran care.
  • Veterans: Over 30,000 US service members died by suicide after returning from post-9/11 wars — more than four times the number killed in combat.

These numbers do not capture indirect deaths from damaged infrastructure, healthcare system collapse, and economic devastation, which some estimates place in the millions.
