The Chinese Communist Party
The structure, ideology, and internal dynamics of the CCP — the world's largest political party and China's ruling institution.
Party Structure
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has over 98 million members, making it the largest political party in the world. It is organised on Leninist principles of democratic centralism: decisions flow downward from the top, while lower levels can discuss but must ultimately obey.
The party hierarchy runs from village-level party cells up through county, municipal, and provincial committees to the national level. At the top sit the Central Committee (~200 full members), the Politburo (24 members), and the Politburo Standing Committee (currently 7 members) — the apex of power in China. The National Party Congress, held every five years, formally approves leadership changes and ideological direction, though real decisions are made behind closed doors before the congress convenes.
