The Arab League

The oldest regional organization in the Middle East — pan-Arab aspirations, internal divisions, and the struggle for relevance.

Unity in Name

The League of Arab States was founded in Cairo in 1945, predating the United Nations by months. Its 22 member states share the Arabic language and cultural heritage, spanning from Morocco in the west to Iraq and the Gulf states in the east. The League's charter emphasizes sovereignty, territorial integrity, and coordination on economic, social, and cultural affairs.

The Arab League embodies the tension between pan-Arab solidarity and the reality of diverse national interests. Its members include wealthy Gulf monarchies and impoverished states, secular republics and theocracies, allies of the US and adversaries. The League has historically been unable to mediate the most significant conflicts in the region — the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, and the Syrian Civil War all exposed deep divisions.
