Thatcher's Legacy: Love Her or Hate Her

The enduring debate over Thatcher — the most divisive British prime minister of the 20th century and a figure who still shapes politics today.

A Nation Divided

When Thatcher died in 2013, the reactions illustrated her legacy perfectly. She received a ceremonial funeral with full military honors at St. Paul's Cathedral. At the same time, 'Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead' from The Wizard of Oz reached number two on the UK singles chart, driven by celebratory downloads in former mining communities.

Her supporters credit her with rescuing Britain from the 'sick man of Europe' status of the 1970s, taming inflation, reducing union power, and restoring national pride. Her critics blame her for destroying communities, widening inequality, and creating an economy that enriched the City of London while abandoning the industrial north. Tony Blair's New Labour accepted much of the Thatcher settlement — a testament to how fundamentally she changed the political landscape.
