Taiwan's Tech Economy Beyond Semiconductors
TSMC dominates the headlines, but Taiwan's technology sector extends far deeper — from display panels to bicycle manufacturing to AI development.
The Hidden Tech Giant
Taiwan punches far above its weight in the global technology ecosystem. With a population of only 23 million, it is the world's 21st-largest economy and dominates multiple technology sectors beyond the semiconductor industry that gets the most attention.
Electronics manufacturing: Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision), headquartered in New Taipei City, is the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer, assembling products for Apple, Sony, and Dell. Pegatron and Wistron are also major contract manufacturers. Together, Taiwanese companies assemble a majority of the world's laptops, servers, and networking equipment.
Display technology: AU Optronics and Innolux are among the world's leading flat panel display manufacturers. Taiwan's display industry, though facing intense competition from South Korean and Chinese firms, remains a significant player in the global supply chain for monitors, televisions, and mobile devices.
Precision machinery and bicycles: Taiwan is the world's leading manufacturer of high-end bicycles — Giant and Merida are globally dominant brands. This niche illustrates Taiwan's broader economic strategy: competing on quality, design, and engineering rather than cheap labor.
