Evaluating Statistical Evidence

How to assess whether statistics in evidence are meaningful, misleading, or manipulated.

Why Statistical Literacy Matters in Debate

Statistics are the most persuasive and most abused form of evidence in competitive debate. A well-chosen statistic can anchor an entire argument, and a misunderstood one can undermine your credibility with a knowledgeable judge. The difference between teams that use statistics effectively and those that get caught misrepresenting them often comes down to basic statistical literacy.

You do not need a statistics degree to evaluate evidence. You need to know four things: what the number actually measures, how the sample was selected, whether the comparison is fair, and whether correlation is being presented as causation. These four checks catch the vast majority of statistical misuse in debate rounds.
