Spotting Bias

Framing, omission, loaded language, source selection, and placement.

Media bias isn't just about left vs. right. It's any systematic pattern in how information is selected, framed, or presented that favors one perspective over others.

There are several distinct types of bias to watch for:

  • Selection bias — Which stories get covered (and which don't)
  • Framing bias — How a story is contextualized ("tax relief" vs. "tax cuts for the wealthy")
  • Omission bias — What facts are left out
  • Source bias — Who is quoted and who isn't
  • Placement bias — Where a story appears (front page vs. buried)
  • Tone bias — The emotional register of the language used

Every outlet has some bias. The question isn't whether bias exists — it's whether you can detect it.
