Speaking in Formal Settings
How to speak effectively at Model UN, ceremonies, panels, and other formal occasions — where the rules are different from everyday speaking.
Why Formal Settings Require a Different Approach
Formal speaking environments — Model UN committees, parliamentary debates, awards ceremonies, diplomatic receptions — operate under constraints that don't exist in casual speaking. There are protocols for who speaks when, how you address others, and what topics are appropriate. Violating these norms doesn't make you a bold communicator — it makes you someone who doesn't understand the room.
But formality is not the same as stiffness. The best formal speakers work within the constraints while still being authentic and engaging. Barack Obama's addresses to the UN General Assembly were formal in structure but conversational in delivery. The protocol is the frame; your personality is the painting inside it.
